What Are The Voices Telling You?

Mental Health
Clinical

I entered nursing school with the sole goal of becoming a psychiatric nurse. But even if you do not specialize in psych, you will use what you learn in this class in every other setting you work in. NCLEX and HESI are both big on that therapeutic communication (you know, where you say something nice and helpful instead of what you REALLY want to say).

You are also going to want to know your defense mechanisms. You get to use a lot of them in nursing school (YOU I mean, not your patients- "I'll think about test #3 next Friday at 2 pm.")

The one good thing about psych is that drug classes are limited. There are a few categories and you are done. I have seen TONS of  NCLEX practice questions about lithium, though. The NCLEX loves lithium.

So here are you nursing implications for lithium:

And here is a song by Nirvana:

Here is a guy talking about psych drugs who I am not convinced doesn't need some himself:

Really, really good (and serious) channel explaining psych drugs:

Love This:

This class is taught by Mr. K. He's an amazing teacher. He is clear, concise and organized. The class is very well presented and very interesting. He engages you during class and is interested in your opinions  His slides are well written and relevant to the tests. This is another teacher who will tell you exactly what he is going to test over (maybe that has something to do with a Y chromosome?)

Clinical:

This is another clinical that is a little different from what you are used to. You cannot go pick up your patient the night before. They do not let nursing students wander into psychiatric hospitals alone. That frees up some time. Much of your paperwork is done while you are actually in clinical.

You are also expected to attend a court hearing at MMHI. It is fascinating. I was amazed by the amount of compassion I saw during the proceedings. Try to get this out of the way early in the course, it takes up quite a bit of time and there's a paper to write about it.

You will also attend an twelve step program meeting. Most popular being the ones offered by AA. Here is a link to help you plan when to attend:

You have to do two long IPRs.  They are not as bad as you think.

You will visit the Alzheimer's Day Service. I loved this. It was a nice day. I ended up doing some of my service learning hours for Denmark getting donations for them because I was so impressed with the facility.

Lastly, there are two different color whistles-green and purple. I wanted a purple one and didn't get it.
