Obtaining Employment
For me, job searching has been a pretty intense experience. I worked REALLY, REALLY hard for two years. Shouldn't people just be handing me jobs right, left and center? Ms. V keeps trying to calm me down by telling me that all our graduates are hired within three months. Everyone I have talked to tells me that is true, so I am choosing to believe them as I enter month number two.
In case you are not one of the lucky ones who gets hired even before you graduate, here is an article about how to survive the job search:
So what else has been helping? I am beginning to see that knowing people may help. I have been tapping every available resource I have. People who already work in hospitals, ex-nursing school professors I happen to know, instructors, friends on Facebook, people I meet in the coffee shop. I am Shameless. I am Jewish for goodness sake, do you know how many DOCTORS I know?
In the meantime, it helps to be very whiny on a certain Facebook group. My friends are very supportive and have bunches of good ideas.
Yesterday one of those very friends pointed out to me that I was actually searching for the jobs incorrectly. Look at this- maybe it'll help some future job-searcher who is not quite as incompetent as me:
See that little line that says 'keyword'? Well, when you write 'registered nurse' in there instead of leaving it blank, 300 more jobs come up. It's amazing. People would tell me about jobs and I could never see them. Well, there they are! Tons of them. And I feel so wanted, they welcomed me back (although I think by now it should say, "You again?")
Ask other people what they have been doing to get a job. You have to be creative. I had four people help me rewrite my resume, I have walked into the human resource offices, I have bugged recruiters. Something has got to help, right? It's awfully tempting to give up and just go work at Kroger, but I want more than anything to be a nurse, so all this is worth it and I don't know how to use the cash register.
This blog is all about gathering resources and helping make people's lives easier. So, here are links to the job listings of the major hospitals:
